For Shame: U.S. Army Failed To Properly Test Our Troops' Body Armor

The U. Army says it has banned the use of body armor that is not issued by the military. Army officials say any soldier wearing commercially purchased body armor will have to turn it in and have it replaced by authorized gear.

Military officials said they cannot guarantee the commercial gear's safety. Army Lt. Craig Giancaterino searches for insurgents in the Al Jazeera Desert of western Iraq in a photo released March 27, The Army banned soldiers from wearing non-military issued body armor. And so it's not authorizing the use of any commercially made protective gear. Anything that is purchased outside of Army issue, we do not want to have our soldiers wearing that.

We're concerned about the protection of a soldier and we want to make sure they have the best body armor available. The most popular brand the soldiers have been buying is called the Dragon Skin, which is produced by a California company called Pinnacle Armor.

The military and Pinnacle Armor argue over whose product is best. Neal says the Interceptor System is ineffective and doesn't protect soldiers as well as the Dragon Skin system does. MURRAY NEAL: I consider it somewhat criminal when people knowingly continue to hide a system that is better than what's out there, have had people die because of the inadequacies of a system that's in place and continue to perpetuate it.

NORTHAM: The military says that the Dragon Skin's capabilities do not meet Army requirements and that aggressive advertising campaigns by it and other body armor companies are fueling public concern. Paul Rykoff, with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America says he understands the backlash from the public.

But Rykoff says it's right not to allow soldiers to use whatever equipment they want. They need to enforce continuity and standards. You know, you couldn't have everybody going out and buying their own bullets, you couldn't have everybody buying their own hardware. And that most of the soldiers say the Army's issued armor is top of the line. If anything, there's too much armor weighing the soldier down. So Rykoff says the military has come a long way since the first two years of the war.

But it does have to be a constant evolution. The enemy threat will evolve and we need our equipment to evolve as well. All rights reserved.McQueen was in Afghanistan in September when two gunmen fired at him and his comrades from around 20 feet away.

With the latest revelation from officials of the US Army in MarchUS soldiers could well be on their way towards invincibility. A new set of body armor and new helmets have been finally completed after years of development. The new body armor is not only lighter than its predecessor but also provides better protection and allows better mobility for ground troops. The new helmet, besides being lighter, is also designed to provide double the protection of its predecessor against blunt force trauma.

This new Soldier Protection System SPSin short, will give soldiers the ability to take a serious beating, and walk out alive.

McQueen took a head shot from a machine gun, but quickly sprang to his feet and ran for cover. The 3. McQueen revealed that prior to that event, he had felt that the helmet was too heavy and that its design was overkill.

The IHPS also features a boltless retention system which allows the four bolt holes that used to hold the chin straps to be eliminated. According to Lieutenant Colonel Ginger Whitehead, the product manager for Soldier Protection Equipment, drilling holes on helmets has a downside: it weakens the material. The chin straps are attached to the sides of the helmets now, without bolts. On each side of the IHPS, there are removable rails which would allow soldiers to mount lights and other necessary accessories on the helmet, especially when working under low-light conditions.

In a statement by DeGroot, the new helmet, with its slightly larger area, provides more space on both sides for soldiers to put on headsets more comfortably.

The new body armor, the Modular Scalable Vest MSVweighs around 11 pounds without ballistic plates, and 25 pounds when fitted with front and side armor plates. Overall, it is lighter by five pounds than the Improved Outer Tactical Vest which is currently in use in the Army.

Another item in the SPS, the Blast Pelvic Protector, reportedly provides extra protection for the groin and upper thighs.

Perhaps it is impossible to achieve the perfect protection system. But with the constant improvements on existing models, and the desire to go even further, the United States military looks poised to take a shot at achieving invincibility, even if that is only slightly possible.Army photo.

After years in development, the Army will field its brand new body armor, combat helmet, and protective gear to soldiers with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne division later this month, officials told multiple media outlets on Monday.

Ginger Whitehead told Military. The IHPS was originally scheduled for a battlefield debut in Stephen Thomas told Army Times. These details were revealed to reporters in attendance at a Monday ceremony at Fort Belvoir for Staff Sgt.

Apart from less weight and more protection to the 3. The new protective best weighs in at 25 pounds when fully equipped with front and side body armor plates, five pounds less than the current Improved Outer Tactical Vest and a major boon for close-combat units given t he burden of excess weight during a firefight.

All of these new pieces of protective gear have undergone extensive testing among Army units over the last several year, all part of the Army efforts reconcile a need for improved body armor load weights with efforts to reduce traumatic brain injuries. Time, and the efforts of the 3rd BCT, will tell whether those efforts paid off or not. Air Force. Marine Corps.

Sponsored Story. After years of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and learning the deadly lessons from those conflicts, the US Army is introducing newer, more adaptable soldier protection for frontline units. Grant Turnbull spoke to the officer responsible for introducing the new system to find out how it will enhance soldier protection going forward.

A key driver for the new SPS was to ensure the system is comfortable for all soldiers including women. Image: US Army. In addition, soldiers will receive new Transition Combat Eye Protection TCEPballistic protective eyewear that can adapt quickly to light and dark scenarios similar to everyday sunglasses. The officer responsible for SPS notes that many of the new additions have been incorporated to aid soldier mobility and lethality. That was not possible on previous soldier protection equipment and Whitehead points out that this was particular important as frontline combat roles are progressively opened up to women.

Another element is increasing the size range of ballistic armour plates that a soldier can choose from, especially as smaller soldiers do not need to have larger and heavier plates. While these two elements are ultimately unisex, a new ballistic combat shirt that provides deltoid protection will be gender specific. Other changes for the female variant include a shorter sleeve and a wider sweep to prevent the shirt from riding up the body.

The Integrated Head Protection System has an optional mandible guard for lower face protection. Image: Revision. The goal was to make the new vest as light as possible, and pushing the envelope in terms of materials and new technologies. The vest can be adapted in such a way that in its lightest form it can be worn under civilian clothing, while the heaviest configuration can protect against a myriad of battlefield threats.

For added safety, particularly in terms of removing soldiers from burning vehicles or aircraft, there is a four-point quick release system on the vest. Protective undergarments have also been improved. So we have replaced that with the blast pelvic protector, a one-piece unisex [system] that goes on the outside of trousers, and on each leg there are multiple buckles to adjust for hip circumference and thigh size.

For the future, the US Army is eyeing emerging technologies and materials including ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene composites, with studies looking at its use in protection gear such as helmets.

Whitehead notes that the developers are also looking at the use of next-generation Kevlar and even biologically engineered spider silk. The US Army is currently working with Kraig Biocraft Laboratories to develop a strain of genetically engineered silkworms for protective textiles.

The Soldier Protection System incorporates several subsystems including a new lighter helmet, torso protection and transition eye protection. Image: PEO Soldier. This includes boron carbide, one of the hardest materials on earth, as well as silicon carbide. The hard armor plates drive half of the weight of the SPS. So wherever you can find ways to cut weight without sacrificing protection, we are constantly pushing that.

The new modular vest, blast pelvic protector and helmet are now being manufactured in large quantities and fielded to troops being deployed on the frontline, while the advanced VTP still has over a year to go before it enters mass production. Army ground combat units overseas. While the Interceptor Body Armor and the Outer Tactical Vest were considered fairly effective, questions were raised over whether or not they were the best possible armor solution for soldiers of the United States Military.

This debate was heightened by controversy over Dragon Skinproduced by the now defunct Pinnacle Armor. Various claims surfaced that Dragon Skin was more effective at protecting soldiers than the then standard issue Interceptor body armor system, with independent studies and reports seeming to back these claims, eventually leading to multiple congressional members asking for further evaluation.

The functionality of the enhanced side ballistic inserts, which provide coverage under the arms and down the sides of the torso, is built into the IOTV. The IOTV provides the ability to don the vest in two ways. The first is to simply place the vest over the head and pull down, and the second is to remove fasteners on the wearer's left shoulder, sliding into the vest to the right.

Ported amc heads

To complete the procedure for both methods the wearer then lifts up the front panel of the vest and fastens the waistband, which takes the weight of the vest off the shoulders somewhat, and then fastens the side protection modules. A key design feature for the IOTV is that the entire armor system is able to be released with the pull of a hidden lanyard. The armor then falls apart into its component pieces, providing a means for escape in case the wearer falls into water or becomes trapped in a hazardous environment.

It also features a grid of PALS webbing on the front, back, and sides for the attachment of modular pouches and accessories such as neck and throat protection, groin protection, or deltoid protection. Previously, standard tactical vests were issued to women in combat. Army soldiers found that women's movement was restricted, in ways such as bending over, getting in and out of tight spaces, or positioning their rifles against their shoulders.

The long armor plates inside the vests would also rub against their hips and cut into their thighs when they sat down. Development of a model for women began in After much testing and measurements, the Army came up with a vest that is shorter to accommodate smaller torsos and has tailoring to fit closer to women's chests.

The new vest eliminates gaps between the material and the body and can be fitted with smaller side ballistic inserts for small waist sizes. The first female soldier vests were given to soldiers deploying for Afghanistan in September Nearly all modern military body armor is designed to prevent penetration from bullets to vital areas of the body, in addition to protection against knives and fragmentation from explosives. Typically this is accomplished through both highly durable woven synthetic fibers such as Kevlar or Dyneemaand either metal or ceramic trauma plates.

The IOTV is designed to take the weight of the vest off the shoulders and move it to the lower torso. The vest is also equipped with a mesh inner cover that is designed to improve airflow inside of the armor. However, the back pad does not provide significant ballistic protection. The vest can withstand a direct impact from a 7.
